Barcza Winery – Nagy-Somlói Juhfark, 2018

Like all wine at the Barcza Winery this Juhfark was fermented without cultured yeast in steel tanks. Following fermentation it was racked to oak barrels and was aged for 8 months on its fine lees before bottling.

Juhfark is an ancient Hungarian variety; the name (’sheep’s tail’) refers to the shape of the bunches. Once planted all over Hungary, today it is grown on just 180 hectares and this is mostly concentrated in Somló. The grapes for the 2018 Barcza Juhfark come from two vineyards, one on the southern slopes of the hill, the other on the north-western side. The volcanic, basalt soil most people associate with Somló here is mixed with a tiny amount of clay. The palate is mineral and salty. The bright acidity promises a long life ahead for this distinctive dry white.
